I suppose I have to change the outdated posts I did for foreign nurses hoping to work here in Norway, as there will be changes in the process of application starting this year. A lot of nurses, especially Filipinos, are reacting negatively to this unreasonable change.

There are two ways for a nurse with education from countries outside the EU / EEA seeking authorization in Norway: Either start again on the Bachelor's degree program and get an exemption for certain subjects, or to take the qualification route, which may contain the nasjonal fag, medication management, language, practice and some theoretical topics.

From January Høgskole i Oslo og Akershus or HiOA (College of Oslo and Akershus) is starting a new study entitled "Professional and Scientific basis" of 33 credits, which is a collection of all subjects. Previously subjects been spread over several years in nursing education, but they are now being compressed as a course to make it easier for foreign nurses to qualify.

Norwegian Registration Authority for Health Personnel (SAK) recently said that it is too early to say whether the creation of the new study on HiOA will lead to nurses with education from countries outside the EU / EEA will save them from starting from scratch.

Currently, the health care ministry is out for consultation a proposal for a new licensing system for healthcare professionals who are trained outside the EU / EEA. One of the points in the proposal is that a decision by SAK shall be valid for at least three years, to give a more predictable system. It is also proposed that language examination, examinations, courses in national subjects and medication management should also be taken.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-66275939608727947582014-10-24T01:09:00.002+02:002014-10-24T01:19:21.048+02:00Learn Norwegian Part 5I already started with the Bergenstest preparation course online today. To be honest, I really missed studying and learning something new in the Norwegian language. In fact, I have learned one Norwegian expression today:

Å ta seg vann over hodet

Source: huffingtonpost.com

when broken down literally means:

å ta seg - to take oneself
vann- water
over - over
hodet - the head

Do I see a bulb just lit up there? No, sorry guys. This does not mean Ice bucket challenge. Nice try...

Seriously, this simply means, biting off more than you can chew. Taking a task that is so big for you, that you get overwhelmed and eventually, failing to accomplish it.

I am a member of Facebook group, Ja, Jeg snakker lift Norsk. It is intended for foreigners who want to learn Norwegian. Members are both Norwegians and non-Norwegians. Such group is very helpful if you have questions relating to the language. When writing a post or comment here, I am really mindful of the grammar, the choice of words and the tone of my voice. It is a good practice really. Plus people here are so quick to correct you, which is another positive thing.

Speaking of corrections, when someone corrects you or points out a mistake you did, how do you react/feel? Do you go all full metal gear into defensive mode or maybe just laugh it out? I asked this because I want to let you guys know that it is impossible to learn a language without committing grammar errors, incorrect use of words or pronunciation, not understanding the sentence or the context, not being able to communicate your thoughts or feelings properly, etc. It is really frustrating. REALLY. I did not learn Norwegian overnight, neither was it just a walk in a part. I was laughed at, been quite humiliated, discriminated and backstabbed because of my then poor Norwegian, etc. All this because I was learning a new language. No, I am not asking for a pity party here. The reason why I am sharing this is because as much as I enjoyed learning Norwegian, it is not easy and for you to understand that, if you want to embrace a new language, you really have to be humble and learn where you´re at in the learning curve. I have come into terms that I will never be able to speak 100%, perfect Norwegian, but I aim to at least speak 90%. Just that, and I am OK. I remember back then when I met a new colleague at work, I would always tell them that I don´t speak well yet and ask them to be patient with me. I even encourage them to stop and correct me. I do not take offense when they do.Nope, not at all. It was really humbling experience for me.

I have watched a lot of foreigners learn the language, from nothing/ scratch. All the time, the advice I tell them is this: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT say "Yes, I understand" even if you really don´t. This is a fatal mistake almost all foreigners do while learning Norsk, or I maybe, any language. I have to admit that I committed this mistake early years here in the country. I was afraid to lose face to my colleagues - that I could not understand what they were saying equates to incompetence or inadequacy on my part. It must be human nature: Kapag hindi mo gets, slow ka (If you don´t get it, you are slow to pick up) and you are branded stupid, dumbass, imbecile, pea-brain, birdbrain, /insert more words synonymous to idiot here/. Period. No one can´t blame you though, we are living in a harsh, judgemental world. It only took one certain mistake for me to realise that it was really a stupid thing to do and a waste of time.

I think it requires a lot of honesty, not only to the other person, but to yourself. As the Norwegians would say, it is better to ask a lot, than to ask too little. They don´t bite. They are even more appreciative whenever you tell them you did not understand or get what they are trying to say and they would gladly explain it. I have not yet met a Norwegian who did not take time explaining something to me when I asked them to.

Yikes, I may have strayed from the topic I originally intended to write, i.e. the Norwegian expression. haha Anyway, yeah, Ice bucket challenge anyone?
I have been yapping about the Bergenstest for a while now and I did not even realise that I haven´t made a info entry on it yet. (Sorry!) I am not gonna make up any excuses for it (though I really have a good one).

Bergenstest or the Test in Norwegian -higher level is a language test complying with the European framework of language proficiency. This test will prove a candidate´s mastery on the Norwegian language. It has two parts, the written and oral, which could be taken separately. I will be taking only the written part because that´s the requirement to get in a university/college. Also, the test is held four times a year, in january, april and october.

The written test is intended for foreigners who wish to apply at a university or college in Norway, Norwegian citizens who took up high school/pre-college abroad and job-seekers and professionals who needs a certification of their mastery of the Norwegian language.

To take the test here in Norway, you have to pay a fee of 1900 NOK for the written part and 925NOK for the oral. You can take it in Bokmål or Nynorsk. The application is done online and is binding.

Where to take it? There a couple of testing centres across Norway. These centres open depending on the volume of the candidates taking the tests. Usually in big cities like Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, the exams are held regularly there, but you have to apply early because they have limited slots, I heard.

For candidates taking the test abroad, you have to pay a fee of 3500NOK. The test is held usually the same days as the tests are being taken in Norway.

Ok! For the contents of the test. I found this from folkeuniversitetet´s website.

The written test measures reading comprehension of theme-oriented texts, listening comprehension of short conversations and news reports, skills in writing an account of an interview, knowledge in grammar and syntax and writing an essay on a given theme.

The test has two parts (part 1 has three tests and part 2 has two). There is a 20-30 minute break between these 2 parts.

Part 1:
a) Reading comprehension
b) Listening comprehension
c) Minutes of an interview

Part 2:

d) Grammar, word and phrase
e) Written production

The part A, B and D is corrected after an answer key. For the minutes of interview, it will be qualitatively assessed according to the following criteria: dissemination, content, language (text structure, vocabulary, grammar and spelling& punctuation). While the written production is evaluated according to dissemination, text structure, vocabulary and spelling & punctuation.

....to be continued.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-28563220351460573802014-10-22T21:39:00.003+02:002014-10-22T21:47:36.491+02:00Admission test to a Bergenstest course online As promised from my previous post, I am doing a separate entry on the recent admission test I did to get a slot in an online course in preparation of taking the Bergenstest.

I have to let you know first though that there are other available internet-based courses. The examples I will be showing are sourced from the admission test of Rosenhof. So if you have questions whether these are actual tests in the Bergenstest, I cannot 100% say.

So about the course! The course is made for academics who wish to improve on the written part of the Test in Norwegian- higher level. This test is aimed for persons aiming to apply at a university or college in Norway and for employees needing a certification on the Norwegian language proficiency. To take the course, it is a prerequisite that the applicant has already a knowledge in Norwegian language to a level equivalent to passing a language test or more.

The test will evaluate whether you understand the basics in Norwegian grammar, as well as testing if you have a wide vocabulary. The maximum points you can earn is 100. A score of 80-100 is a very good result and it means that the course will be useful for you as intended. Scoring 70- 80 is also a good result. You will learn a lot from the course. A score of 60- 70 means that you have the potential but you may or may not need to take a lower level Norwegian course. You have to send in an essay if you wish to be evaluated to be admitted to the course. And lastly, for a score under 60, it is recommended that you take another course.

The test is divided into 5 parts. You can only take the test once and after sending in your answers, it will be registered. Taking time and thinking it through is a good strategy here. And one more thing, without me stating the obvious: No asking for help or using a dictionary for this. The results will not reflect the actual level your Norwegian is, i.e., you are only fooling yourself.

Part one is reading comprehension. Here you will choose the right word that completes the sentence/ thought of the sentence. One strategy I applied here was reading the whole article first and got a sense of what the article is all about. There are 3 choices on each drop box.
Part two will test your vocabulary. I found this part quite easy. When I started learning Norwegian, I always had a dictionary in my pocket and I always look up the words I don´t understand. Or if I don´t have a dictionary at hand, I write it down and then look it up later. Though I don´t have a very ginormous vocabulary- by doing that, I was able to increase it slowly. I still encounter some words and expressions even after 6 years living here, but I never fail to find out what they mean.

Part three is grammar, word and expressions. You are ask here to write down the lacking phrase so that sentence A and B means the same. This is where you learn paraphrasing, which is a very useful too in learning Norwegian grammar.

Part four is listening exercises. Recorded conversations is played continuously and only once. At the end of each conversation you have around 15 seconds to choose the right answer. There are four alternatives to choose from so you really have to listen very well because the choices can be tricky.

Now did I say five parts? Well If you fall into the 60-70 score range then you will have to write an essay if you wish to be evaluated to take the course. A confession: I didn´t read the whole introduction of the test so even though I already passed the 70% passing line, I still did an essay. Haha Eager beaver alert! So yeah, the last part is the essay. For the essay, I was asked to write about the new role of fathers in the Norwegian society. It is normal for Norwegian men to take part in caring of babies/children, which is I think a good thing and something all men should be doing all around the globe. :)

This year´s first snow fall happened last October 16. (I know, late post!) I remember waking up to a day where everything outside seemed to be dusted with confectioner´s sugar. It is a light thought, reminiscent that to the story of Hansel and Gretel- minus the children-eating witch part. To my fellow expats who originally come from tropical countries, you probably remember that first time you saw and held a snowflake on your palm when you came here - or some other version similar to that. I remember mine.

There is always two sides to a story. It is not always sunny and happy, we all know that. (Yikes, I sense an impending gloom). This snowfall equates to the end of warmer days and welcoming the cold, grey/dark and depressing season. Why do I always remember the movie 30 days of night when autumn/winter comes? I know right??!! (Too much watching of The Vampire Diaries and the The Originals) Hyssjjj!!!! (Norsk equivalent to shush).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-59764080082420707122014-10-16T00:50:00.002+02:002014-10-22T23:05:32.672+02:00My road to Bergenstest

At last! After the long wait.

When I passed the Nasjonalfag for sykepleie, it felt like it was a breakthrough. That feeling when you finally discovered the definite cure for cancer. Well, I am exaggerating. :) Seriously,I knew back then that I had reached a milestone in my quest here in Norway, but like all other quests, that is just one leg and sooner or later, another challenge will emerge. I was meaning to take the Bergenstest right after I became a nurse here. That was the plan. But it took me what, 5 years, to finally do something about it.

Why am I taking this test, you might ask me. I am already a nurse and I passed the Norsk prove 3, which is the standard requirement. Good question! haha Let me tell you this though. I wish to go back to school and take a specialty or higher education (masters or maybe a Ph.D.) and a requirement is passing the Bergenstest, which is designed for foreigners who intend to apply for admission at a Norwegian university or college. Not only that, you see, some employers, especially in Oslo, also require that applicants has a B2 or higher level in language proficiency. Competition is getting stiffer here.

A challenge though: I could not physically attend a Norsk kurs in Oslo (where bergenstest preparation courses are held). My daughter is exclusively breastfeeding and is not a big fan of bottles so I have to be with her or I can be away but for like 1-2 hours max. But I did not let this deter me. I really want this. So I looked over the internet if there are online courses offered and viola! I found one.

Oslo Voksenopplæring Rosenhof is offering an online Bergenstest preparation course. They have like 15 slots per class and to get in, you have to take inntakstest (an entrance/ evaluation exam) to check whether this course suits you, in terms of your norskkunskap. So I took the inntakstest and to make the long story short, i got in! Self high-five! :)

I will be doing a separate post on what the entrance test was about and throw in some of the examples. :) So I hope to see you again on my next blog entry. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-70069076552842696622014-10-06T00:23:00.001+02:002014-10-06T00:25:38.836+02:00I am on the local newspaper
Hi guys.

After putting a serious thought on how my previous blog looked, I decided to make big changes on the layout and add more of my interests here. I have been blogging since 2008, though not as religiously as I´d hoped, nonetheless, it is perhaps about time to have this blog out there and get things right. One more blog taken out of the eyesore blogs list. :)

I would like to apologise if some of the links here are not working or seems odd or out of place. You see I am learning this edit HTML... mano-mano style! (So expect a long and tiring learning process). Anyway, I gonna ask my older brother to help me out because all I see when I look at my screen are #, /, =, etc. And it is making me D.I.Z.Z.Y.! Annoying right?
I read an article today at Moss Avis, a local newspaper, where a kommune (municipality) applied to the fylkesmann (regional head) that one area called Larkollen would be declared a tourist spot. Not that it would only attract visitors, but it also means that stores there can operate on sundays. Not to surprise everyone who reads this, but yes, generally all stores are closed on sundays here. That is just the way things have been and that is how the way it is since I came here.

We Filipinos have it in us to go to the mall on sundays with the family to eat at a fast-food/resto or just window shop. This is one thing I love about living in the Philippines and I miss malling terribly on sundays. It was kinda disappointing when I learned that shops/ stores are closed here on sundays. But there is an exception! Mini shops at gasoline stations and grocery shops smaller than 100 square meters are allowed to operate. There is a silver lining though as the number of shops are opened on sundays have increased in the past 5 years. That is good news indeed. Still, sundays here can be really boring, if you are used to hanging out at the lively, busy malls we have in Pinas.

Why are malls and stores closed here? Apparently, Norwegians consider sundays as family day. Instead of shopping, they would rather go on hiking, cycling, camping, skiing and insert here more outdoor activities. Friluftsliv (life outdoors) is very popular and very well observed here. Of course, there are those who just stay home, but the main point here is that sunday is a day to spend with your family and the government, by prohibiting store operations, has really made it in a way, mandatory to do so.

So guys, what do you think? :)

I know right? It all started with this blog, Bargain Boggart´s blogspot at Sanriotown, my first blogging stint. Taking a quick browse over it, made me nostalgic. A then unemployed, fresh out of nursing school days me and experimenting on all sorts of mumbo-jumbos. (Did I just use that word)? Despite being a true geek-at-heart, the world of beauty, fashion and arts never seize to amaze me. I do check out on the latest trends once in a while... well, maybe more often than that. ;) Going back, I honestly think that Bargain boggart´s blogspot did make a more conscientious buyer out of me when it comes to finding a good and cheap, if not, reasonably priced purchase.

However, since I moved here in Norway, my love for a cheap deal waned off a couple of notches and is now filled in more with an eye for items with great quality, if not, luxury. Having been exposed to designer brands, I can now compare the good products to the bad... errr not so good products. I have learned a certain art! Thanks to regular or seasonal sales here, where items can be put on up to 70% off, it is a no-brainer to dig in your wallet to buy, for example, a pair of well-made leather boots (not faux!) for like 300NOK. All you have to have is PATIENCE and being at the right place at the right time (because not all sales are announced).

Now that we are talking about shopping, let me just tell you, Norwegians LOVE shopping! And I can blame them and their oh-so attractive materialistic society why my love for quality products has come about recently. LOL! Oh don´t get me to start there... :) But kidding aside, after a sound analysis of the situation here, where it is dark and cold most of thetime and so limited places to hang out, I honestly believe that shopping is therapeutic for us... uhm, them? :p Fine. Us. So there, do not judge us, people! :)
Haha It has been what a year or more since my last post. That gap in my cyber life here proved to be a very meaningful one because you see, I became a mom. :) I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl last May. Isn´t that cool or what? It is not an understatement when others say motherhood changes one woman´s life. Mine did... a lot but I love every moment of it. So my dear readers, my future posts will also include everything and anything under the sun about parenthood and raising a child.

Today, my hubby, I and baby JM went to Oslo to get JM´s passport application done at the Philippine Embassy. I was kinda dreading the picture- taking part because I know, getting a baby to look at the camera is a matter of employing my amateur stage mother skills. Hahaha I was wrong though. With the help of the cheerful employees at the embassy (two wonderful women, I might add), we were able to get JM´s photo in one shot. Another first proud mom moment there. Processing time usually takes 6- 8 weeks and after that, we have to apply for her residence permit at the UDI. I can´t wait to get everything done, so that we can travel outside Norway.
Here is a picture of me and my little cupcake munchkin (yeah I call her that), having lunch at Mr. Hong´s restaurant. After eating at Carol´s in Horten last year in September, it took time before we found a new place offering an eat-all-you-can option here in Norway. My husband is a huge sucker for eat-all-you-cans so we could´t miss this chance now, could we?
For the story, click HERE.

The Philippine Embassy started conducting this informal classes since 2009. Most of the graduates were au pairs, and were asked by the ambassador, Bayani S. Mercado, to become little ambassadors of the Philippines and encourage their foster families to consider spending a vacation in the Philippines.

This is a crazy idea but I am honestly thinking and seriously considering of spending my vacation leave someday in the Philippines and start Norwegian classes with a lesson plan designed for nurses! :) I must be aiming beyond my reach here but I actually see myself doing this... :) (OK, I am day dreaming again!)

Going back to today lesson, I´ll go back to basics...

Learning a new language always starts in mastering the Alphabet letters and their sounds. The Norwegian Alphabet is composed of the English alphabet plus 3 more letters, namely; Æ, Ø and Å.

When I started going into Norwegian classes (this was in Manila), most of us in the class had really a hard time pronouncing the three special characters correctly. To top that, the sound of the remaining letters in the alphabet it not the usual english pronunciation. We thought it was silly hearing ourselves enunciate the letters one by one (being the snobs and english literate we were). Quoting my then teacher, he said when we speak Norwegian, we should adapt the Bisaya pronunciation. :) We were like, HUH? Anyway, long story short, we did and it went smoothly and surprisingly, easier. :)
And when I got here and took Norwegian classes again, our pronunciation was constantly corrected.

The three special characters are very tricky sometimes. But practice until you get it right. :)

Æ - is pronounced like the "A" in /bat/ and /cat/. Pronounce the long A in each word so you can get it correctly.

PRACTICE WORDS:

BÆR - berry
NÆR - near
VÆR - weather

Ø - It is similar to the sound of "U" in the word /urgent/, the "I" in the word /sir/ and the "O" in /word/. This sound is the most difficult to get, in my opinion.
What is the difference with "O" in Norwegian alphabet? There is no english sound equivalent for it. But if you must, watch this video by thenorwegianschool for the pronunciation of "O".

PRACTICE WORDS:
I've been receiving emails from lots of Filipino nurses asking about the process and info about going to to Norway and the likes. I apologize for not having been active in replying and even updating my blog recently as I should have been in the first place. Anyway, I'll be posting a quite long list FAQ's here soon so that hopefully it can cover up some of the basics. Of course you can still send an email for other inquiries but let me just get this straight before anything else...

Some of the emails i got were from persons asking me to find places to rent /live or finding an employer for them. I am sincerely apologizing right now but I cannot help with this for the very reason that, first and foremost, this blog's main purpose is to increase awareness and give out info regarding to how it is working as a nurse here in Norway and the mumbojumbos along the way. In my previous post, I stated there that I am not affiliated with any goverment body, agency or instution, nor I work for any private person/ business. Second, it is always good to help, I do believe in that, and for me this is the best way I can contribute to those who aspire in starting their nursing career in Norway. You might think that I am selfish for refusing to find them apartments or jobs, but I work and I have a life too outside it and doing that for you is not ideally how I will like to spend my day offs. Plus the fact that I live alone and I do all the chores here at home, run errands, etc. If there anything living in Norway has taught me, it is definitely self-reliance and learning to be independent. It is different here and not everything is served on a silver plate. I know I am being direct here but I hope I got my point across without you murdering me. :) And thank you for understand and for your mercy. :)

Anyway, enough of the serious, gloomy stuff... See you on the next postAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-81288776754151804172013-01-31T18:03:00.002+01:002013-02-04T19:03:23.925+01:00ADVISORY TO ALL FILIPINO NURSES hoping to work in NorwaySOURCE: //www.philembassy.no/news-item/advisory-filipino-nurses-healthcare-workers-should-be-wary-of-advertisements-consultancy
The
Philippine Embassy in Oslo wishes to warn Filipino nurses and
healthcare workers about misleading information currently circulating
online and peddled by a growing number of “consultancy” firms about the
supposed abundance and ease of finding nursing and other healthcare jobs
in Norway.

Said consultancy firms make these unsuspecting Filipinos believe that
getting a nursing or healthcare job in Norway is easy, advertising
misleading information such as “NO IELTS and/or PRC License needed”
among other gimmicks, when in truth, it is not easy to find work as a
foreign nurse or healthcare worker in Norway.

While it is true that IELTS is not required by most health care
employers in Norway, this is only because English is not the primary
language used by the country and its healthcare sector. Instead, foreign
nurses and healthcare practitioners wishing to work in Norway have to
pass a different and much harder Norwegian language exam and take other
exams in order to be deemed employable as a nurse or healthcare worker
in Norway and to do so requires that the Filipino be ready to spend a
large amount for his or her tuition for further studies, board and
lodging, etc. while in Norway.
And while a PRC license may not be needed for the processing of one’s
visa application, said license is still required by relevant
authorities in Norway in order for a foreign healthcare worker to be
properly recognized as such in Norway.

Moreover, these Filipino nurses and healthcare practitioners should
be advised that authorization from SAK (Statens Autorisasjons-Kontor) or
the relevant Norwegian government authority does not equal work or
employment nor is it equal to a nursing license. It merely recognizes
that the Filipino has the qualifications of a healthcare worker, nothing
more. Authorization/Autorisasjon does not equal work.
Authorization/Autorisasjon is not equal to a nursing license in Norway.
Another alarming aspect about the proliferation of these consultancy
firms is that they charge these unsuspecting Filipinos with, often,
large sums of money for information and services that the Filipino can
actually obtain for free and do by himself or herself if the latter only
consulted the appropriate websites (i.e. Norwegian Embassy, SAK, etc.).

The Embassy has reported this alarming situation to the DFA and DOLE
and it has handled several cases involving victimized Filipino nurses
and healthcare workers who have been duped by these unscrupulous
consultancy firms. Said Filipinos usually arrive in Norway without an
employer and sometimes without even a place to stay. Most are deeply in
debt and have no means to fund their stay in Norway, which is one of the
most expensive countries in the world. Their situation makes them
vulnerable to further abuse and victimization.

It is not easy to find work as a foreign nurse or healthcare worker in Norway.
While the Philippine government is working hard to address this
matter, the Philippine Embassy is enjoining the Filipino Community in
Norway to help spread this advisory and warn Filipinos about these
unscrupulous consultancy firms and the false information currently being
spread by the latter.
Moreover, related to this matter, the Embassy also wishes to
reiterate its previous warning about various unlicensed, unaccredited
and informal Norwegian Language Schools/Courses proliferating in the
Philippines, enticing many Filipino professionals, especially nurses, to
pay unreasonable fees for language classes that are staffed by
unlicensed and/or untrained teachers for the chance to land well-paying
jobs that are supposedly awaiting the student in Norway upon completion
of the language course.

The Embassy wishes to warn the public of the pitfalls of falling prey
to these unaccredited schools and agents. The Norwegian Government has
not accredited, licensed or recognized any Norwegian Language
School/Course operating in the Philippines for profit nor does it deal
or cooperate with any agent or agency. The Norwegian Embassy has
released several warnings about said schools and agents such as the link
below and encourages visa applicants to go to the Norwegian Embassy
directly.

http://www.norway.ph/embassy/visainfo/news/agents/
Filipinos who have fallen victim to these Philippine Norwegian
Language schools arrive in Norway expecting to immediately find work
only to discover that further Norwegian language courses are needed at
additional expense and that the visa issued to them by the Norwegian
Embassy is not enough time for them to finish the needed language
courses and find a job. This makes them vulnerable to abuse and human
trafficking.
Filipino professionals wishing to practice their profession in Norway
should equip themselves with the proper information by visiting trusted
information sources such as Norwegian government websites (Norwegian
Embassy in Manila, Norwegian Labor & Welfare Organization or NAV,
Norwegian Registration Authority for Health Personnel or SAK, etc.) to
avoid falling victims to human trafficking and so as to be in full
control of their professional future.

Anyway, if you think Norsk is an easy language, think again. I´ve been living here for 3 and a half years and although I feel comfortable speaking the language, I find myself baffled sometimes with the new words or expressions I encounter. :) Anyway, learning is a life long process. So deal with it. :)

Here are some expressions/ words:

1. Tørr bak i øret - yeah, if you see the translation, word for word, below, it´s easy to interpret it as it is, that is literally. But to be ¨tørr bak i øret¨ simply means being old. (person)

tørr- dry
bak - behind, back
i - in
øret - the ear

2. holde i sjakk, for example, holde det i sjakk - Again, it does´t make any sense? Hold it in chess? haha but on a serious note, to "holde i sjakk" means to keep (something) under control.

holde - hold, keep
det - it
i - in
sjakk - chess

3. svart i øye - this one is easy! it´s a black eye! yeah, it can be...however, this expression is fun to use figuratively. :) Whenever someone says he or she is "start i øyet¨, it means that that person so immensely irritated or enraged to the point that you can "see" or read it in his/her eyes the anger cooking inside them.

svart - black
i - in
øyet - the eye

Anyway, I hope you guys learned something here. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-33456170768752295072012-01-09T00:35:00.003+01:002012-01-09T00:43:15.663+01:00You know you have been in Norway too long when…1.You associate warm rice porridge with Saturday and xmas eve.
I wasn't used to cold then, coming from a tropical country were the only coldest place I've ever been (Baguio) was nothing compared to what I was about to face. Imagine me wrapped like a suman (Filipino delicacy, steamed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves). You can even mistake me for a taliban woman. I had my mouth and nose covered with wooly scarf and a bulky bonnet on top of that. I have 4 layers of clothes on my back and 3 layers of socks to withstand the cold. The temperature was dwindling from 4C to -2C in just a matter of hours. I had to wake around 4am to catch the train to go to work. And talk about how hard it is to get up from bed when it's so cold yet you are lying under a comforter, warm and cozy. That's just a small bit of the battle against cold weather.

2010, this was the coldest autumn ever recorded in Norwegian history for the last 90 years or so. The smug look of my face disappeared as snow first fall in October and the temperature was averaging -15C in november! I thought I got it... having stayed here for over a year, I had this delusion of grandeur that I'd escape that sensation where cold seems to penetrate through your bones. I was wrong. Big time! Snow first fell earlier than anticipated and boy! Our dear snow was so adamant to just melt away that we had snow from October until April the following year.I'll never forget fall/ winter of 2010 because besides it was the baddest and coldest I've ever experienced so far, it was at this time when I bought my own place...For me , it was a strand of summer sunlight among the gray clouds and gloomy autumn weather.

This year, it's the opposite. The climate had been nicer to us. When it's suppose to be 1- 3C now mid November, temperature's still reaching 7 to 8C mid day. Although it can drop as much as 2 or 3C early in the mornings, I am still happy because, I can still go out with a layer of socks and pants and 2 layers of top and a jacket. I don't need to wear hats, bonnets, scarf or gloves all the time yet. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-41023174386687156812011-10-09T14:11:00.000+02:002011-10-09T14:11:44.549+02:00SpotlightIt is not so surpirsing that some people will do anything to grab everybody's attention, however annoying, stupid, fascinating or disgusting the means are. I don't bother myself thinking about being in the top or being the talk of the town, because, honestly, it didn't matter to me. My life is my own doing and it is how I want it to be. In the eyes of many, they have different perceptions of you. And it is that difference that makes it so easy to say, "I am me. Love me or hate me" and get away with a booboo. Nobody's perfect. Don't you just love that?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469923911501871539noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7225469671441479311.post-540096889489010102011-09-04T11:45:00.004+02:002014-09-12T16:09:49.683+02:00WORKING IN NORWAY - INFORMATIONThe past couple of weeks, I have been on constant thought about how much people will go in order for them to grab an opportunity and see where chance can lead them to.

There had been a couple of readers who sent me PMs asking how to apply working here in Norway. I think it's great there are those who take interest and time on sending me emails/PM's and in return, I try my best to reply and shed light on their inquiries.

DISCLAIMER: I am not related to any government office/ agency or institute related to immigration and working niether in Norway and Philippines. I am just a humble "norsk sykepleier" (Norwegian R.N.) who wishes to help and share the steps I did back then.

NOTE: YOU CAN APPLY BY YOURSELF.

1. APPLY FOR AN "AUTORISASJON" (license) at SAK.

Statens Autorisasjonskontor for helsepersonell (SAK), formerly known as SAFH (Statens Autorisasjonskontor for Helsepersonell) - SAK is the Norwegian Registration Authority for Health Personnel, which responsible for granting the professional authorisation which is required for practising the applicants' profession within the legally regulated health personnel categories. Authorisation represents full and permanent approval, while licences impose one or more limitations with respect to duration, independent or supervised practise, etc.

For the step by step on applying in SAK, please click this <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">LINK.

NOTE: The Autorisasjon does not cost that much, you will receive a bill of statement from SAK and pay a certain amount to their bank account. I have heard stories from victims who paid almost 3500USD (17500NOK) to a "MIDDLE MAN" to get an autorisasjon. Beware of swindlers, there are many out there! Also, WHENEVER YOU PAY for something, ALWAYS ASK FOR A RECEIPT stating exactly what was the paid amount for.

Ok, now you've got your autorisasjon, what's next?

***Kindly email me ( my contact details on the right side of the site) if you have more questions. :) It is my intention to spread information to my fellow nurses who wish to work here in Norway, as to avoid landing in the hands of swindlers with false promises. I know, when an opportunity knocks at your door, we answer to its call right away without taking caution and researching first about it. We all dream of greener pastures. I, however, urge my fellow Filipino nurses, to be careful and be vigilant. Seek for information first and do your homework. :)
